Andy Murray loses in three straight sets to Stan Wawrinka to exit French Open
Murray wins just six games in an hour and 27 minutes‘A bit simpler than I expected,’ Wawrinka admitsIt was hardly the reunion Andy Murray envisaged but, three years after losing to Stan Wawrinka in a semi-final that few present will forget, there was little he could do against the power of the Swiss in three mercifully quick sets on the opening day of the 2020 French Open.Wawrinka won 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 27 minutes in a near-empty Court Philippe Chatrier on a wickedly cold Sunday afternoon, a towering anti-climax for the loser and the tournament. Their 2017 epic took nearly three hours longer - and wrecked both of them for a worryingly long time. Continue reading...

Essex pick up Bob Willis Trophy after draw with Somerset
Somerset 301 & 272-7d drew with Essex 337-8 & 179-6Essex win trophy on first innings scoreAfter much toil and little sweat – too cold for that – the Essex players could lay their hands on the Bob Willis Trophy. For the second year in succession they won a trophy by drawing their last game of the season against Somerset. Theirs was yet another gritty performance, heavily reliant on another mighty contribution from Alastair Cook, who scored 203 runs in the match.Once more Somerset won nothing more than sympathy. At least the Championship pennant was not at stake so it is inappropriate to talk of 145 years of frustration. This was a one-off tournament, given greater standing by the association with Bob Willis and it has been contested over two months with admirable intensity, no more so than in this final. Jamie Vardy hat-trick takes Leicester top and stuns Manchester City
This was a scintillating exhibition of why Jamie Vardy is so dangerous. His was a hat-trick that made Manchester City appear half-paced and meant Leicester City handed their hosts a loss in their first top-flight home league game of the season for the first time in 31 years.Vardy’s intervention – scoring penalties in the 37th and 58th minutes plus a sweet backheeled finish in-between – meant that before the hour the Foxes were cruising, a memorable win completed by James Maddison’s 20-yard curler and Youri Tielemans’ third penalty for them, the last coming after the No 9 had been replaced. The victory takes Leicester top of the table. Continue reading...

The Guardian view on accusations against the military: playing politics with personnel | Editorial
The overseas operations bill is a shameful piece of legislation that could harm British troops as well as potential victimsThe overseas operations bill is an anodyne name for a nakedly political piece of legislation that a former head of the armed forces has described as dangerous, harmful and a stain on Britain’s reputation. It would effectively decriminalise torture if it took place more than five years earlier. Most people understand that soldiers work under unique pressures. The case of Phil Shiner, the human rights lawyer struck off for misconduct after pursuing false claims of torture and murder in Iraq, created understandable anger about the nightmare that personnel can face when wrongly accused.
