From wearable blankets to fruit gin: Guardian readers’ DIY Christmas gifts
Want to give your presents a personal touch by making them yourself? Here are 11 ideas for homemade festive offeringsI recently made a recipe for Somali chicken stew from In Bibi’s Kitchen by Hawa Hassan and Julia Turshen. It included a spice mix called xawaash, AKA “the garam masala of Somalia”. I plan to make more xawaash and give it to people with an accompanying print-out of a recipe to use it. To make it, you smash a cinnamon stick (in a bag) and heat it in a saucepan with cumin seeds, coriander seeds, black peppercorns, cardamom pods and whole cloves. After a few minutes, leave to cool, then grind to a fine powder before adding turmeric and stirring well. I was apprehensive about the “half a teaspoon” of cloves on the ingredients list, so I just added three. Next time, I’ll be a bit more adventurous. Jude Law Says Contagion Scientists Warned Him Real-Life Pandemic Was A Case Of 'When Rather Than If'
Jude Law has revealed that scientists on the set of Contagion gave him a stark warning about a potential real-life pandemic, almost a decade before the coronavirus crisis. In 2011, Jude played a conspiracy theorist in the film about a fictional virus which swiftly leads to a pandemic.Reflecting on the experience of making the film, the British star revealed that the team consulted with many scientists and medical experts, who warned that an actual pandemic was a case of “when rather than if”.Speaking to GQ, he explained: “There was absolutely the sense that this was going to happen.“The great scientists on set with us who had worked with Scott Burns, the writer, and Steven [Soderbergh, its director] were very learned and experienced individuals who knew what to expect and they all said to us that this was going to happen, and it was a case of when rather than if.” Jude continued: “The way they described it, which is exactly as it has happened, just made sense. What’s scary is you learn in a set like that because you’re being advised by experts, but it doesn’t necessarily sit.“When 2020 started and we heard about what was initially happening in China and what fast became apparent around the world, it rang alarm bells. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t hugely surprised.”Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter over the summer, Jude’s Contagion co-star Kate Winslet also spoke of how the film had helped her prepare.“People thought I was crazy because I had been walking around wearing a mask for weeks, going into the grocery store and wiping everything down with isopropyl alcohol and wearing gloves,” she said“Then all of a sudden March 13 came around, and people were like, ‘Fuck, where do I get one of those masks?’”Watch Jude Law’s interview with GQ in full in the video above.READ MORE: Jude Law Recalls Ominous Warning From Virologist Advisers On Set Of Contagion Covid Tier Checker: Here Are The Rules In Your Area Boris Johnson Says Covid Tiers Needed To Avoid 'New Year Lockdown'

Will everyone in the world have access to a Covid vaccine? – video explainer
The hunt for a coronavirus vaccine is showing promise but it is premature to say the end of the pandemic is nigh. Several rich countries have signed a 'frenzy of deals' that could prevent many poor nations from getting access to immunisation until at least 2024. Also, many drug firms are potentially refusing to waive patents and other intellectual property rights in order to secure exclusive rights to any cure.Michael Safi, the Guardian's international correspondent, explains why 'vaccine nationalisation' could scupper global efforts to kill the virus and examines what is being done to tackle the issueToday in Focus: A vaccine revolutionSee all our coronavirus coverage Continue reading...

Different age groups may get different Covid vaccines, experts say
