For America’s black politicians, winning an election can lead to jail | Cliff Albright
The motivations behind today’s efforts to overturn elections and remove black elected officials are not very different than Reconstruction-era motivationsOn 5 November, Hester Jackson-McCray, a black woman, narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Ashley Henley by 14 votes in a heated race for a seat in the Mississippi house of representatives.Shortly after, Henley asked the Republican-dominated Mississippi house to overturn the election results, based on claims including that one precinct didn’t collect voter signatures (a technicality required to process ballots in the state) and that her campaign had found three uncounted paper ballots. Jackson-McCray, meanwhile, pointed out that the election had been run by the Republicans – Henley’s party – making it unlikely that she had manipulated the race in her favor. This turn of events was particularly surprising because the Republican party tends to cast doubts on the existence of voter suppression, the idea that political parties find ways to prevent Americans from voting, calling it a Democratic myth. There is hope: Boris Johnson’s big majority could unleash the social liberal within | Simon Jenkins
Everything is now in Johnson’s hands: and that includes opting for a softer Brexit, and dialling back his rightwing rhetoric • Latest election news – live updatesNow what? Boris Johnson’s bonus for a stunning election victory is room for manoeuvre. He promised to “get Brexit done” and the UK will surely leave the EU in January. But he was careful not to say how. He only said that he would also leave Europe’s single market and customs union, a choice for which he will now claim a mandate. A mandate is not a plan. Labour won’t win again until it works out why it lost | Gary Younge
It’s not enough to blame Jeremy Corbyn, Brexit or the media. The picture is far more complex than thatFull election results hereThis changes everything. The fourth national vote in four years has broken the parliamentary logjam with devastating effect. It was a rout. Labour’s vote in its traditional strongholds finally collapsed. The demographic, geographic and social ties that bound its coalition together have unravelled. We have yet to see if they can be put back together again. Britain has elected the most rightwing government for decades handing the least principled leader in living memory such a massive majority that it could take a decade to get rid of him. Last night was bad. The worst is yet to come. The left must now find the space to grieve and think simultaneously. Because it’s not about us. It’s about the more hopeful society we want to create, the people we want to create it with, and the dystopia that they are in the process of creating. And we won’t be in a position to win again until we work out why we lost. Continue reading...

Fifty shades of dismay as grimmest campaign ever finally comes to an end | John Crace
Could EL James dominating the decade’s bestseller list be one reason Britain has fallen apart?Latest election reaction – live updatesIt’s often said that all political careers end in failure. Increasingly, many seem to also start in it. But few leaders can have suffered as big a fall from grace as Aung San Suu Kyi who was kept under house arrest by the military for 15 years between 1989 and 2010 for her attempts to bring democracy to Myanmar. In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel peace prize and she became a global icon for bringing power to the powerless through non-violent protest. For years, she was one of my political icons, up there with Nelson Mandela, as an unequivocal force for good in the world. Continue reading...
