Grace Before Jones review – a peek behind the mask of megastardom
Nottingham ContemporaryA fascinating look at the many faces of a model who has posed as warrior, diva and ballerina – and fought her way to the topBefore there was Grace Jones – icon, goddess, warrior, megastar – there was a different Grace, young and awkward. Aged 21 or 22, she greets us through a doorway in an early modelling shot: head tilted appealingly; hair in a polite chignon; a nervous smile. This Grace Jones is bare shouldered but for two lengths of thick gold chain wound tight around her neck: a clumsy bit of styling, and one that is chokingly uncomfortable. Twenty-one years later, on stage at the Palladium, she will perform Slave to the Rhythm costumed entirely in chains: cowl, dress and long strands of linked metal dangling from cuffs on her wrists. Jones quickly came to understand the power of the image, and has worked it brutally hard for more than 50 years to retain her place in the spotlight. Continue reading...

Feminists like me aren't anti-trans – we just can't discard the idea of 'sex' | Susanna Rustin
If we replace ‘sex’ with ‘gender’ as a way of thinking about ourselves, it will be harder to tackle sex-based oppressionName a female thinker with an eponymous adjective. The man-derived words are commonplace: Aristotelian, Confucian, Trotskyist, Churchillian. Two queens, Elizabeth I and Victoria, have great chunks of British history and culture named after them. But this is not the same thing. In fact, with the exception of Thatcherism, it’s hard to find a noun describing a woman’s ideas that is in anything approaching general usage in the UK. Even the novelists Jane Austen and George Eliot don’t have a style named after them in the way that Charles Dickens (Dickensian) and Henry James (Jamesian) do. Continue reading...

Jimmy Fallon on the debate: 'Felt like getting a Covid test in both nostrils'
Late-night hosts lament the incoherent, off-the-rails presidential debate, from Trump’s interruptions to Biden’s frustrationLast night’s presidential debate was, by most accounts, an off-the-rails train wreck, one quickly trashed by late-night hosts. “Usually when you see two guys this age arguing, it’s about leaves being blown onto each other’s lawns,” said Jimmy Fallon of the 90-minute spectacle which pitted Donald Trump against Joe Biden, both in their 70s, for what turned into an incoherent, sinister mess. That Click review – photographer tribute develops into a dud
Celebrities line up to sing airy praises of fashion snapper Douglas Kirkland but this film can’t find an interesting angleThis serviceable if somewhat glib documentary pays tribute to the photographer Douglas Kirkland, an industry veteran who has been around long enough to be famous for shooting some of the most iconic pictures of Marilyn Monroe (the very white ones where she’s basically just wearing a sheet). More recently, he’s photographed Elle Fanning, Michelle Williams and Sharon Stone, who all duly make themselves available to gush airy praise about working with him. Some of the actors he shot – particularly Williams, and Nicole Kidman – have intelligent observations to make about his method and aesthetic. But if the film’s goal is, as it seems to be, to argue that he should be seen as a serious artist and not just an apparatchik of the publicity industry, maybe there should have been fewer vapid soundbites from interviewees such as Paris Hilton. She notes “how passionate he is about his photos and you can really feel that when you see them, so shooting with this legend was really incredible”. Er, thanks. Continue reading...

ITV Offers Assurances As I'm A Celebrity's New Wales Location Goes Into Local Lockdown
ITV has offered its assurances after its new Wales location for I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! was placed under local lockdown. The upcoming 20th series of the reality show is due to be filmed in November at Gwrych Castle in Conwy, after the coronavirus pandemic meant it had to relocate from its usual home in the Australian jungle. However, the Welsh government has announced that a number of new local restrictions will be placed on areas including in Conwy – which is in Abergele in North Wales – coming into effect from 6pm on Thursday. The new rules mean people in these areas will not be allowed to enter or leave their areas without a reasonable excuse, such as travel for work or education, and they will only be able to meet people they do not live with outdoors. The advice in Conwy is applicable to households and not to places of work.A spokesperson for ITV said: “I’m A Celebrity continues to adhere to all relevant guidelines as well as our own strict Covid protocols.”Work has already begun to transform the castle into the setting for the new series of I’m A Celebrity. The sprawling castle, complete with turrets, is nestled on a tree-lined hillside overlooking the Irish Sea and is spread across 250 acres of gardens and grounds.According to its official website, the towering structure was built between 1812 and 1822 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh.Ant and Dec will host an adapted version of I’m A Celebrity, which will see celebrities face trials and challenges to win food and treats in the lead-up to one of them being crowned king or queen of the castle, rather than the jungle.Among those rumoured to be taking part include former Strictly Come Dancing professional AJ Pritchard, ex-footballer John Barnes, TV presenter Vernon Kay and Coronation Street star Beverly Callard. I’m A Celebrity is due to return to ITV in November. READ MORE: Ant, Dec And Cat Deeley Share First Look At SM:TV Reunion And Now We Couldn't Be More Excited I'm A Celebrity, Get Me In There?
