Taipei speaks of ‘real possibility’ of war as US undersecretary for economic affairs pays visit that Beijing regards as provocative

Taiwan’s foreign minister has called for the international community to help defend his country against an intensifying military threat from China, fearing “a real possibility” of war.

The comments from the minister, Joseph Wu, come before the expected arrival on Thursday in Taiwan of the US undersecretary for economic affairs, Keith Krach, with a delegation for a two-day visit.

Marilynne Robinson: 'America still has a democratic soul'
The author of Gilead on the Black Lives Matter protests, the dangers of social media, and her latest novel, JackMarilynne Robinson is an American novelist and essayist. One of Barack Obama’s favourite authors, she won the Pulitzer prize for fiction in 2005 for her novel Gilead. This was the first in a trilogy of books that chronicle the spiritual journeys of two families in a fictional mid-western town. Her new book, Jack, returns to the most enigmatic character in the series, as he embarks on an interracial relationship in segregated St Louis. Robinson lives in Iowa, where she set her Gilead novels.Your new book reacquaints us with the sad and troubled world of Jack Boughton, the wayward son of a small-town Presbyterian minister. What made you decide to revisit his story?Jack was still on my mind. When I am writing a novel I find that characters become well known and important to me out of all proportion to their place in that particular fiction. And it seemed to me also that the world of the novels would be stabilised, in a sense, if this absent central figure, whom they all love, were known, given his own life. He characterises the place and the times by what he has to deal with, and the culture of his family by what in it he is, after his fashion, loyal to. Continue reading...

Exeter show of strength puts them in final and proves too much for Toulouse
Exeter 28-18 ToulouseSam and Joe Simmonds star in superb performanceThere will be a new name on the Champions Cup this season and, on this evidence, Exeter will take some knocking from the podium. As Toulouse can testify after this pulsating semi-final there is a steely purpose about the Chiefs that belies their supposed inexperience at this level and a multi-talented Racing 92 side will find themselves up against opponents who suddenly believe anything is possible. Not unlike Munster in their heyday, there was simply no holding the supposedly unfashionable local heroes from the deep south west and by the final quarter, the four-times European champions Toulouse were like boxers who had taken too many blows to the ribs. The Chiefs, by contrast, were still pounding the rock, hungry to score even more than the four tries they did manage. Continue reading...
