People's Most Scathing Takes On The Government's Covid Strategy As The UK Becomes A Hotspot
Covid cases are soaring and the UK has become one of the worst coronavirus hotspots in the world – so people are understandably frustrated that the government is not really reacting.Health secretary Sajid Javid even admitted on Wednesday that cases could even hit 100,000 a day.Yet, the government is not planning on changing its current approach to handling the pandemic and has already ruled out any chance of a winter lockdown.Restrictions have not been in place since Freedom Day, July 19, and masks are no longer mandatory in most settings in England. The UK will be buying 730,000 doses of two new antiviral treatments for Covid once approved, but for many, it’s already too late and the government needs to enact ‘Plan B’ of its Covid strategy by bringing back more controls.Javid did, however, claim there was no plan B at the moment – despite pleas from NHS representatives to act now before its late.People were quick to share their frustration and scathing analysis on the government on Twitter. What's most disturbing about our current COVID situation is the government clearly don't have any meaningful plan, other than "let's see how bad things get before we do anything"— Owen Jones

Sajid Javid Urges Public To Meet Outdoors Amid Surge In Covid
Sajid Javid has warned Covid cases could go as high as 100,000 a day, amid concerns about a winter surge in the spread of the virus.Speaking at a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday afternoon, the health secretary said the pandemic was “not over”.In a toughening of the language from government, Javid urged the public to meet outdoors where possible, wear face coverings in crowded enclosed spaces and take frequent rapid tests.“With winter ahead, we cannot blow it now,” he said. “Although vaccinations are our primacy form of defence, there are many more things we can all do to help contain the spread of this virus, like meeting outdoors where it is possible. There are currently around 49,000 Covid cases a day in the UK. Ministers have so far rejected demands it implement its “Plan B” contingency measures for suppressing Covid. But Javid said he was looking “closely at the danger” and had decided not to reintroduce restrictions “at this point”, leaving the door open to doing so in the coming weeks.Plan B could include legally mandating face coverings in some settings, introducing mandatory vaccine-only Covid-status certification and asking people to work from home.It came as the government announced deals have been agreed for two new treatments which could be used for some of those most vulnerable to the effects of Covid.Thousands of courses of the antivirals have been secured to be ready for use this winter, subject to approval by the UK medicines regulator. The treatments, from pharmaceutical companies Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD), and Pfizer, would be aimed at those most at risk from the virus, including the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.Related...Why Are UK Covid Infection Rates So High Compared To The Rest Of Western Europe?

Concetta Caristo: the 10 funniest things I have ever seen (on the internet)
In this column we ask funny people for the best online ephemera to brighten our day. Concetta Caristo starts by casting her mind back to high schoolMy earliest memory of something funny online was the Papa’s Boat meme. It’s a reference to a poem called The Old World that was featured on the 2010 School Certificate English test for Year 10 students. In 2010, Facebook was king and so was liking funny Facebook pages. They would come up in your newsfeed as “Concetta Caristo likes Standing naked on the porch waiting for google maps to take a picture” or “Concetta Caristo likes Carrying a fork in your pocket just in case someone has lasagna”.The night after the first English exam, I’m awake scrolling my Facebook newsfeed when I start to see some of my classmates liking these pages about the poem I had JUST spent all morning reading and analysing. “Sarah likes That awkward moment when Papa keeps his boat.” I’m dying. “Bryony likes I throw my Papa in the air sometimes saying ayo, where’d my boat go?” My mind is exploding and I’m laughing alone in my bed as meme page after meme page rolls in. In that moment I was at one with every single Year 10 student in New South Wales. Do any other 1994 babies remember this? If you do reach out to me for God’s sake. Continue reading...

My impulse to surf with strangers from the internet was a social experiment gone very right
An ad posted on Gumtree became the perfect welcome mat for a lonely expat returning to Australia during the pandemicI learned to surf in California, and continued to develop after moving to Hawaii. By the time I left, moving back to Sydney during Covid, I could still pull off a sweet wave, even where the big boys surfed. At least on a good day. Surfing makes me feel powerful, connected and happy.Starting life again in Australia – a place so familiar, yet so foreign – was really hard. I found myself a boyfriend who gave me a sweet longboard for my birthday, but then we broke up. I was a mess: lonely, lost, stressed and sad. I tried to enrol friends who surfed to come out with me, but everyone was too busy with their robust lives of children and work. I tried to make friends on the beach, but surfers can be surprisingly solemn. I tried going alone and I found it too intimidating. Continue reading...
