Xbox One November Update now available with Google Assistant, new gamertags, and text filters
Microsoft is rolling out its November 2019 Update for the Xbox One today. The big new addition is Google Assistant support, allowing you to use a device with the assistant or app to control an Xbox One. Google Assistant won’t run on the Xbox One itself, but you’ll be able to use it to launch games, apps, turn the console on and off, pause videos, and more. Microsoft first started testing this feature back in September. Alongside the Google Assistant support, Microsoft is also implementing its new gamertag support in the November update. This means you can now pick any gamertag and use numbers at the end like Discord or Battle.net use. While you could change your gamertag earlier this year, it’s now fully supported on console in friends,... Continue reading…

Tariff anxiety is mounting across American households, threatening the backbone of the economy
Rick Wilking/Reuters Trade tensions with China have further raised alarm in American households, undermining one of the brightest spots in an economy otherwise expected to slow.  About two-thirds of US adults were concerned about how tariffs would impact their household spending in October, according to a new survey from the market-research group Civic Science. 7 things to do today if you want to be a stay-at-home parent
Hero Images/Getty It takes a lot of planning to switch from a two-income household to a one-income household, but there are several steps you can take today to get financially prepared.  In addition to talking to your partner about money, paying down debts, tracking expenses, and getting quotes for what childcare could cost are all good ideas to get started.  Read more personal finance coverage. Being a stay-at-home parent isn't easy. Even if you're great with money, you may still need to do some extra planning and work before your family is truly ready to live on one income.  There's a lot to consider financially in this situation, from the costs of losing one salary to the costs of childcare. You and your partner will need to have some frank money conversations before you get too far into the process, and decide on your goals and priorities. If being a stay-at-home parent is your future plans, start doing these seven things today to make sure your family is ready to go one-income when the time is right. 1. Start talking to your partner about money RichVintage/Getty Images If you're going to go from two incomes to one, you and your partner will have to be on the same page about all of your finances.  Even though you'll only have one income, it will take two people to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Start by having a conversation about your money, talking about how you'd like to live and the changes you'll have to make to support your new lifestyle.  It might be a good idea to sit down with your partner and make a spreadsheet, as one financial planner suggests. Take an evening to go through all of your income, savings, expenses, and debt to make sure that you'll be ready to make this jump, and to make sure that you're both feeling the same way about it.    2. Track your expenses Vasily Fedosenko/Reuters To know how much you'll need to earn, where you'll need to cut back, and how much you'll need to save in your emergency fund, figure out how much you spend in a month. This is one of the first things most financial planners recommend to people who want to take controle of their money —  you might be surprised by how much you're actually spending.  With a spreadsheet, app, or even a pen and paper if you prfeer, track every dollar you spend in a month. After a few months, you can start to get an idea of just how much you'll need in income to make stay-at-home parenthood work for your family, and you'll have to change to continue living within your means.    3. Start bulking up your emergency fund Justin Sullivan / Staff / Getty Images An emergency fund is a non-negotiable for any family, but when you're relying on one income, it's even more essential.  Financial planner John Pak of Otium Advisory Group in Los Angeles explains that it's all about the "what-ifs," and being prepared to handle them without taking on debt. "What if you get sick? What if you get terminated? What if your company fires you because they're downsizing? I think that's a legitimate fear," says Pak. "To squash that fear, you need to have a good, hefty savings account that's just reserved for emergency situations." Business Insider's Tanza Loudenback reports that a single-earner household should generally have about six months of expenses saved, double the recommended amount for dual-income family. You want to keep that money somewhere safe, but liquid, like a high-yield savings account. A savings account at a traditional bank earns about .1% interest, while a high-yield savings account earns 15 to 20 times that much. It's not hard for six months of expenses to add to up to five figures, so every dollar counts.  See the rest of the story at Business InsiderSee Also:Online banking isn't just for millennials anymore — it's quickly becoming the normA retiree who 'never made big money' says owning property made his retirement possible, and young people shouldn't overlook itA financial planner on the verge of regret after buying her first apartment remembered a key piece of money advice from her grandfather

Myles Powell is one of the greatest college basketball players Tom Izzo has ever seen
The Seton Hall star had his defining moment against Michigan State. Despite an ankle injury, the Seton Hall guard nearly willed the Pirates to victory NEWARK — Myles Powell wasn’t even supposed to play against Michigan State. Even as fans were filing into the Prudential Center, he didn’t know if he would be able to. After the Seton Hall guard suffered an ankle injury in the Pirates’ win over Stony Brook last weekend, his coach, Kevin Willard, told reporters that he would be out indefinitely and that it could be “a prolonged absence.” Willard told Powell to go out for warmups before the game, but to stand on the sideline and watch. When the Pirates went back into the locker room about a half hour before tip-off, he told his coach he was ready to go. “We looked at each other and I just said ‘coach I got you I’m ready,’ he said. “You dream about games like this. It’s not something you pass up on.” Not only did Powell play, he was the best player on the court and, considering the circumstances, gave the best individual performance of the college basketball season so far. His numbers: 34 minutes, 37 points, six rebounds, and six threes in a 76-73 loss to the third-ranked Spartans. Michigan State’s Tom Izzo has coached four first-team All-Americans, coached against dozens more, won a national championship, and been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s seen his share of great players, but watching Powell’s clinic on a bad ankle made a lasting impression. “Myles is one of the great players I’ve ever seen in college basketball,” Izzo said after the game. Yes, it came in a loss, but unless you’re a Seton Hall fan, the result of the game was secondary to the show that Powell put on. Consider his game on Thursday to be the first line on his application for national player of the year. “He’s the best player in the country, it’s not even close, for what he does,” Willard said. “I don’t know if God could have stopped him on some of those shots,” Izzo said. This wasn’t exactly Powell’s coming out party. He was first-team all-Big East last year, averaging better than 23 points per game, and was named preseason AP All-American this season. But Powell had never done what he did against the Spartans on such a big stage — facing the No. 3 team in the country, in front of 14,000 fans, in the marquee game of the night, and on a bad ankle. Most of his production came in the second half, but he was confident throughout. His first field goal came off a defensive rebound where he ran the ball up the court himself, stopped and fired away from three before Michigan State had a chance to set up defensively. What Trenton Makes the World Takes Myles Powell goes crazy for 37 against sparty pic.twitter.com/CY9T6wVpgX— Hoop Fiends (@hoopfiends) November 15, 2019 That set the tone for the rest of his night. Nine of Powell’s 12 field goals came off the dribble and every one of his threes came from well behind the three-point line. “I don’t know if God could have stopped him on some of those shots,” Izzo said. Myles Powell from downtown! pic.twitter.com/DBrqreQwmY— Bryan García (@esperandomarzo) November 15, 2019 The second half is when it started to get ridiculous. He opened the half by flexing in Thomas Kithier’s face after scoring on him in the lane and drawing a foul. He then pulled up for a pair of threes that hit only net and finished twice inside between multiple Michigan State jerseys. His greatest play came with 2:41 left. Coming off a pick, Powell had two Spartans on him. He had just enough space to let one fly, and knocked down a three with Gabe Brown’s hand in his face, again drawing the foul in the process. That shot put Seton Hall up five. Myles Powell. Absurd. pic.twitter.com/MqMKvSxxTF— Kyle Boone (@Kyle__Boone) November 15, 2019 Thanks to what Willard called some poor clock management, the Pirates let that lead slip away. They did, however, have two chances to win the game in the final seconds. Both times, it appeared that a Seton Hall player drew contact, but no foul was called. Michigan State, whose own embattled player of the year candidate Cassius Winston gutted out a 21-point game, survived. Still, the story was the Seton Hall senior. It wasn’t just his point total, gaudy as it may have been. Powell — whose bad ankle was the topic of all that pregame hysteria — commanded the Seton Hall offense, taking over the game whenever the Pirates had possession, then toying with a Spartan defense powerless to stop him. It was that New York-area moxie from a Trenton product feeding off of his hometown fans. “They helped me get through the game,” he said. Powell says his ankle is still bothering him and admitted that adrenaline helped get him through the game. Just don’t expect him to use it as an excuse. Seton Hall heads out on the road next to face a Saint Louis team it lost to in Newark last year. Powell expects to play, just like he did Thursday. “I was just playing basketball,” he said. “I don’t want to keep talking about the ankle.” There’s no need to ask about it anymore.

Here’s how to claim Pikachu and Eevee in Pokémon Sword and Shield
Pokémon Sword and Shieldintroduce Gigantamax forms, supersized versions of pokémon that can be activated during specific battles for more powerful attacks. While all pokémon are capable of turning into towering monsters, only a few have special forms. That includes Pikachu and Eevee, which players can snag for free with a save file from Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! In addition to special moves only available in Gigantamax forms, certain pokémon also get a small makeover. (Pikachu, for example, fills out into his iconic fat Pikachu look of old.) Pikachu and Eevee are available at the game’s Wild Area Station via the game’s online functionality. Players will need to save from Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! to grab whichever pokémon corresponds to their save file. Once you reach the station, look for the pair of kids in the corner. Data from those games can be from any point in play, rather than being a completed file. It’s also worth noting that while the Wild Area is accessible fairly early in the game, it’s still likely to take a few hours to reach. Sword and Shield’s other Gigantamax forms include pokémon like Charizard, Meowth, and Butterfree. Meowth in its original form — not be confused with its extra furry Galarian form — is available as an early purchase bonus for players via the Mystery Gift options from November 15th, 2019, to January 15th, 2020.

How Joker’s gritty logo was created with wood type letterpress
The making of an iconic logo A movie’s logo is often one of the first things that fans see, whether it’s on posters or in a trailer, so it’s not uncommon for studios to spend large amounts of money creating them to build excitement. There’s a lot at stake, and there are entire agencies that specialize in logo creation, with logos passing through the hands of multiple stakeholders and going through several revisions before the public sees them. That’s why I was so surprised when I discovered that the logo for the DC film Joker was created by one designer, Chad Danieley, with wood type letterpress. In a Reddit post, Danieley explained how going analog captured the film’s tone and feel better than a digitally created logo would have. I reached out to Danieley to learn more about the logo creation process, his influences, and personal projects. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity. Chad Danieley in his garage. To kick things off, want to tell us a little bit about yourself and your background? I studied graphic design / motion graphics at ArtCenter [College of Design] in Pasadena. They had a great letterpress studio that was like my second home. In my final two terms at ArtCenter, I interned with [graphic designer] Pablo Ferro (The Thomas Crown Affair, Dr. Strangelove). I would scan his work into the computer for his archives, which would always include hours of stories about his process. For his signature style in Dr. Strangelove, he would draw over fonts for the main title, which is a unique approach. I would try the same sample sheets, and they would look nothing like his. Same with letterpress. If another person used the same wood type, it would have a different feeling for someone else. The personality comes through in the beat-up / dented faces of the type as well as the inking style and how much packing the artist adds or takes away that makes it interesting. Ferro had a strong impact on my career and my process early on. After graduation, I freelanced at a few motion studios for five years, then went to staff at NBC’s on-air department for eight years. For the last three years, I have returned to freelancing. How did you join this project? I was freelancing at Elastic on logos for the show See, and the Joker project came in, and they needed help with pitching logos for Joker. I spent two days on the computer making a bunch of logos in Illustrator, but in the end, it was the first one I did that is the “JOKER” logo as you see it today, “as is” with no changes asked, definitely a first for me. Can you talk us through the creative process for this logo and letterpress in general? Very little information was given for me to go off. All that was said is that it’s much darker and more visceral than the usual DC Jokers. “Think Taxi Driver.” I have an HD full of letterpress-printed sample sheets, and within each print run, I’ll print several states. For this project, I did aggressive / transparency / scraping / noise of that one typeface, then scanned and cataloged each of them. I am not a “purist,” but I have always needed to bring my work outside of the computer by printing it out and adding some of myself into it. Physical objects, like wood type or Letraset, rub down type and help me perceive space in a different way. I don’t always need to work this way, but it does help. It’s great to see that this was made using a letterpress. It might be all in my head, but something about it just feels textile and real as opposed to, say, a digitally created design. Was there any post-work done, or is this pretty accurate to the original? Yes, even after the logo was selected, we tried to make a version that was done in Illustrator, but it just didn’t feel right. The wood type is structurally warped, and I think that’s what makes it what it is. Regarding post-work, not much was done to the original presented logo. WB added slight color to the logo for each poster. The original scan of the print I used was a little transparent, so I just bumped up the levels in Photoshop. But other than that, it’s very accurate to the original print. What font did you use? I actually can’t make it out! It’s an unnamed Gothic. I tend to gravitate toward Gothic digital fonts as well as Gothic wood type as workhorses. They don’t have a lot of style baggage attached to them, which allows me to prod and scrape at them to really turn them into what I’m looking for. When I start adding a lot of texture, I need the typeface to not have a loud voice. Gothic gives me that. Are there any alts out there? Did it take some experimenting to land on one that felt right? No wood type alternates, just the one. I did submit 16 logos that were done in Illustrator, though. I really enjoy the collages you have on your Instagram. Are they primarily personal? Thank you! Yes, the collages and letterpress are both me needing to do something for my own creative output, not just for jobs. Of course, I always bring those explorations into my day work, though. What else are you working on right now? Anything coming up that you’re excited about? I’m starting to digitize some of my wood type to make some fonts. I’m also doing some Joker-themed letterpress prints, and at Elastic, I’m still working on Joker graphics for WB!

Why it’s still hard to believe an NFL team will sign Colin Kaepernick
Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports It’s hard to believe the NFL is holding Kaepernick’s Saturday workout in good faith. The NFL’s latest move in the Colin Kaepernick saga is a scheduled workout with all 32 teams invited, but that’s hardly the full story. There are also unrealistic demands from the league, widespread doubt about the NFL’s intentions, and the overwhelming public opinion that this is all a farcical PR move. Oh, and Hue Jackson. Yeesh. Nearly three years after his last NFL game, Kaepernick is suddenly in a bizarrely rushed situation that virtually nobody seemed to know about ahead of time. The possibility of Kaepernick signing with a new team, after so much time being blackballed by the league for protesting racial injustice in America, seems higher than it has since he was last employed. But there’s a big ol’ asterisk on the whole thing, for a number of reasons. The circumstances behind the workout came with some weird hangups Other than the contact stemming from Kaepernick and Eric Reid’s collusion grievance, there had been no real productive discussions between the league and Kaepernick. Then unexpectedly, the NFL contacted his representatives and invited him to a workout in Atlanta on Saturday, as reported by Tyler R. Tynes of The Ringer. The initial reports suggested that all 32 teams were invited to a workout, which would include on-field drills and interviews. So far so good. That’s when things got confusing. The league told Kaepernick it needed an answer “in two hours” from him on whether or not he would attend the workout. The workout was scheduled for only a few days later, on a Saturday. Kaepernick’s representatives asked if it could be done the following Tuesday, or even the following Saturday, despite that being the day of the week when NFL teams prepare for a game. No dice there, so Kaepernick’s representatives asked the NFL if the process was legitimate, and if key decision-makers from all teams would be in attendance. Included in these discussions was a request for a personnel list to be provided, and the NFL agreed it would do so on a rolling basis. On Wednesday, the NFL apparently changed its mind and told Kaepernick’s representatives that it wouldn’t be providing a list. Then, on Thursday, after more bad PR, the NFL went ahead and released a list of the first 11 teams to commit to attending. Why only 11 teams (a number that the NFL seemed impressed by in its own release)? Because as it turns out, a bunch of teams had no idea this was happening until it was sprung on everyone. Multiple teams reached out to Kaepernick’s reps as a courtesy, saying they couldn’t attend and were ambushed by the entire situation. Keep in mind the original report indicated that all 32 teams were already invited. Not only were teams confused, but members of the league office had no idea this workout was happening either, per USA Today. That report also detailed how this came together, including Jay-Z helping to convince Roger Goodell to hold the workout. And finally, the cherry on top of this suspicious sundae: the league got Jackson to run the workout, which was apparently not only news to all of us, but to Jackson as well, until Thursday morning. That’s a lot of information to digest for anybody. Now imagine you’re in Kaepernick’s shoes and trying to process all of that on a deadline. The NFL can’t lose here One of the more frustrating things about this is regardless of the outcome, the NFL can’t really lose. The league has already taken a massive amount of criticism for blackballing Kaepernick in the first place, and it’s proven adept at pretending the controversy doesn’t exist. Here’s why it can’t lose: If it’s a PR move and Kaepernick isn’t signed to a new team, the NFL can say no team was interested because he didn’t perform well. Had Kaepernick not agreed to the workout due to its unreasonable terms, the league could have painted him as not really wanting to play. If it’s a PR move and Kaepernick does get signed by a team, the NFL can pat itself on the back for throwing this whole thing together, conveniently ignoring the well-earned skepticism surrounding this move. If it’s not a PR move, the NFL will still do those two things above anyway. Even Reid, Kaepernick’s former teammate and partner in the collusion case, isn’t buying it. Reid pointed out that the “interested teams” reached out to the league and not the player or his representatives, which isn’t generally how the NFL works. “I’ll believe it when I see it,” Reid said Wednesday. “At this point, it feels like a PR stunt.” Reid, who is still close with Kaepernick, is just as stumped as the rest of us. “It’s disingenuous,” Reid said. “They want the appearance of giving Colin a chance, but they give him two hours’ notice and tell it has to be on a Saturday when they know decision-makers are traveling. So is this real? We’ll see.” We’ll see indeed, but no matter what happens, any criticism of the NFL will bounce off, as it has all along. I want to believe this ends with a Kaepernick signing, but it probably won’t While Kaepernick posted on Twitter that he was looking forward to the workout — and has been adamant that he’s been NFL-ready this entire time — there are too many question marks around this situation. Even if he’s not signed now, this could potentially help Kaepernick get a job in 2020, if one of the teams in attendance is impressed but doesn’t want to rush into making a decision. But even that outcome is hard to be optimistic about given the history here. I want to believe it’s true — that Kaepernick will actually throw footballs in front of NFL teams with a real shot at being signed. I want to believe that the NFL has stopped blackballing him, and that this workout will be conducted in good faith. It sure would be nice if a team like the Buccaneers or Broncos, both of whom are among the teams confirmed to be attending the workout on Saturday, liked what they saw and signed Kaepernick to a deal. There are many teams that could benefit from signing Kaepernick, in fact. Kaepernick shouldn’t be signed because he’ll instantly make a team a Super Bowl contender; he simply deserves a shot based on his play in the NFL. The man led the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and if you actually watch his film, it’s clear he had the talent of a starting quarterback last time he played. He threw 16 touchdowns against four interceptions in 2016, amid all the 49ers’ turmoil and dysfunction of that time. It would also be great to see such an important figure in today’s unbalanced world get another chance, even if that chance is mired in the stink of public relations and questionable motives from the league. Then again, he’s 32 years old, and has been deprived of that shot for the past three years. Would the NFL really change its mind now? If there’s any chance that this is a legitimate opportunity — and I sincerely hope it is — then I would love nothing more than to see him go out there and kill it on Saturday. But given the nature of this entire dispute and the NFL’s moves thus far, cynicism seems like the smart bet to avoid a letdown if, or when, he isn’t signed.

Hope says that this is a smart business decision, and one that the NFL should follow. "Money talks," she says, and businesses should make their values clear.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. I tried Wegmans' sushi and was surprised that it was better than the sushi at many restaurants
Irene Jiang / Business Insider Supermarket sushi is usually far from gourmet. But when I sampled all the fresh food at the new Wegmans supermarket in Brooklyn, the sushi absolutely blew me away. With its generous cuts of fresh, high-quality fish for supermarket prices, I'd go back to Wegmans again and again, just for its sushi. Sign up for Business Insider's retail newsletter, The Drive-Thru, to get more stories like this in your inbox.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. One doesn't expect much from a box of supermarket sushi. Along with gas stations and convenience stores, supermarkets don't inspire much confidence when it comes to the quality of their raw fish.  But Wegmans is all about shattering expectations of what a supermarket can offer. I'm no sushi expert, but I do love a nice hunk of raw fish on some vinegary rice now and then. Maybe slap on some seaweed. My price range is cheap to medium-cheap sushi, so it's not like I've had the of top-of-the-line stuff.  This is the review of a sushi lover who can't really afford to love sushi. I recently made my first sojourn to the family-owned supermarket chain Wegmans, a New England cult favorite that opened its first New York location in September. After traipsing through aisles filled with affordable quality goods, I ended my trip with a five-course food court fiesta culminating in, of course, sushi. The sushi fridge was filled with rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and even tataki — a high-end touch. Chefs will make you fresh sushi if you ask, but I was impatient. Irene Jiang / Business Insider I grabbed a sushi deluxe set for $21, which is a lot more than I'd normally pay for a supermarket sushi set. Irene Jiang / Business Insider But this one had a couple of certified stunners, like a piece of uni, or sea urchin — one of the most highly prized sushi. Jim and Pam's first kiss happened at Chili's and that's that on that
Merriam-Webster defines "kiss" as "to touch with the lips, especially as a mark of affection or greeting." By the very definition of the word, Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly's first kiss occurred in Season 2, Episode 1 of The Office, titled, "The Dundies." As Dwight would scream if making this argument, "FACT." While in a Chili's celebrating Michael Scott's annual employee awards ceremony, the Dundies, Pam has a few too many drinks (and "second drinks") and proceeds to touch her lips to Jim's lips as a mark of affection. In other words, THEY KISS. For the first time, might I reiterate! See for yourself. Read more...More about Twitter, Television, The Office, Culture, and Web Culture
