Brazen L.A. hawk refuses to leave the hood of a moving car
On an otherwise normal, sunny day, a bird of prey rode around on the hood of a moving car near downtown Los Angeles. The hawk, likely a red-tailed hawk common to the city, landed on the car and wouldn't budge for 15 minutes, reports The Eastsider. The bird didn't move even as the car drove through the city's palm-lined streets. "He's staring at us like he's staring into our souls," one of the passengers says in a YouTube video documenting the incident. It may have been a younger, immature bird, exploring its urban world. Or perhaps the predator had another, elusive agenda. Eventually the hawk flew off. But not before thrilling Angeleno dwellers, both in the car and on the street. Amazon shuts down its social network that you forgot existed anyway
Amazon Spark, we hardly cared about knew you. The shopping social network (a kinda gross concept to start with) disappeared from the internet and Amazon's app some time in the past couple days, according to a report from TechCrunch. Spark launched in July 2017, and was described by your friends at Mashable as "the grossest, purest thing on the internet." It attempted to bridge online shopping and authentic socializing while also bringing in sweet, sweet cash for Amazon.  The service allowed Prime users to post photos of their favorite products in an Instagram-like feed with an easy click-to-purchase option built in.  Read more...More about Instagram, Amazon, Tech, and Big Tech Companies

This remarkable Greenland photo highlights extreme Arctic melting
The melting Arctic is on dramatic display. At mid-June, Arctic sea ice is now at a record low for this time of year, and melted ice is especially notable both in and around Greenland — home to the second largest ice sheet on the planet. Steffen Olsen, a climate researcher at the Danish Meteorological Institute, snapped a photo on Thursday of Greenland sea ice that had melted into a large lake of aqua water, pooled atop the icy surface. Olsen, along with local hunters, had to sled across the flooded ice to retrieve vulnerable weather and ocean monitoring equipment. Their sled dogs splashed through the icy water. Jake Gyllenhaal reveals to Ellen what he wears to bed
This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week. Jake Gyllenhaal sleeps naked, folks.  During the actor's appearance on Ellen this week, Gyllenhaal answered all of Ellen Degeneres' Burning Questions. The pair had a hilariously good time, pressing buttons and chatting about everything from his underwear preferences (briefs) to his favorite body part (the nape of a woman's neck).  When asked what he wears to bed, Gyllenhaal answers, "nothing," to which the crowd loudly responds with whoops and cheers. Thirsty indeed!Image: youtube / ellen Read more...More about Youtube, Ellen Degeneres, Jake Gyllenhaal, One Good Thing, and Burning Questions

NASA spots a telltale 'Star Trek' sign on Mars
The Martian desert is rich in curiosities.  And Star Trek symbolism, too. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter — a satellite zipping around the red planet — captured a mass of ancient lava rock that looks strikingly like the Star Trek Starfleet insignia donned by the show's galactic explorers.  "Enterprising viewers will make the discovery that these features look conspicuously like a famous logo: and you'd be right, but it's only a coincidence," NASA scientists said.  NASA's planetary researchers, like they always do, had a realistic explanation for the geologic feature, calling it "a complex story of dunes, lava, and wind." Latrice Royale talks self-love, values, and voting against Trump in 2020
Every day of Pride Month, Mashable will be sharing illuminating conversations with members of the LGBTQ community who are making history right now. "Get up, look sickening, and make them eat it!"  Latrice Royale, the "chunky, yet funky" queen of RuPaul's Drag Race, has been offering those immortal words of confidence to fans for years.  But in 2020, she'll be taking them straight to the polls — voting not only as a beloved leader of the LGBTQ community, but also as a former inmate with newly restored rights.  A drag queen, activist, and television personality, Royale first came into the national consciousness in 2012 as a cast member on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 4. Snatching the title of Miss Congeniality and placing fourth overall in her season, Royale established a reputation of integrity, kindness, and talent early on in her public history, regularly using her primetime platform to advocate for a cause near and dear to her heart. 9 hidden iOS 13 features you need to know about
iOS 13 is going to be a whale of an update, available for free this fall for iPhone SE, 6S, and newer models. It comes with much heralded features like a system-wide dark mode, redesigned Photos app, new Memoji customizations, and more.  But as with previous versions of iOS, the software update also has a whole bunch of lesser-known features that aren't as flashy but are greatly welcome. Here are the eight we're most excited for — and one that we wish Apple would take back. 1. Unobtrusive volume control People hate the current volume control. When you press the volume buttons on your iOS device, a big volume graphic pops up in the middle of the screen, blocking your content.  Read more...More about Apple, Ios, Wwdc, Ios 13, and Wwdc 2019

Save $200 on the 17-inch LG gram laptop, the lightest device of its size
TL;DR: The slim, 17-inch LG gram laptop is on sale in the PCMag Shop for just $1,499. (That's $200 less than what you'd pay on Amazon or the LG website.) Lightweight laptops are excellent for on-the-go productivity, but as our friends at PCMag have mentioned, it's common for manufacturers to sacrifice display size for portability.  Not with the LG gram 17Z990. Its sleek frame and display are ample at 15 and 17 inches wide, respectively, but it weighs a mere 2.95 pounds, making it the lightest laptop of its size (and even lighter than some smaller laptops).  Its secret? A special metal alloy design featuring a combination of nanocarbon and magnesium gives it the look and feel of a metal laptop, minus the bulk — and at a fraction of the price, provided you buy yours from the PCMag Shop. Tesla owners, prepare to be entertained.  Elon Musk made an appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, known as E3, in Los Angeles Thursday and said in a conversation with game designer Todd Howard and video game journalist Geoff Keighley that entertainment options are expanding in Tesla vehicles. "What can we do to make the car the most fun possible?” Musk mused on stage. People are changing their profile pictures to blue to show solidarity with Sudan
As news of the crisis in Sudan spreads, the color blue has become a symbol of solidarity with protestors in the country on social media. People are changing their profile pictures to blue in an attempt at raising awareness of the extreme violence inflicted upon civilians by the military rulers. An internet blackout — imposed in an attempt to stop protests — has made spreading information difficult.  The color blue is in remembrance of Mohamed Hashim Mattar, a young man who was killed during the June 3 crackdown on peaceful demonstrations by the Sudanese Military. The blue trend was brought to the United States with a viral Instagram post from Remaz Mahgoub Khalaleyal, who asked her American followers Tuesday to reach out to their representatives and condemn the violence. She urged Instagram users to use the color as their profile photos.  Read more...More about Instagram, Sudan, Culture, and Web Culture

Twitter users celebrate Trump's birthday by making #JohnMcCainDay trend
It's Donald Trump's birthday, and by the looks of the trending hashtags, Twitter users are torn. Some YouTube TV Subscribers will get Showtime for free
If you've been subscribing to YouTube TV for a long time, then chances are a Showtime subscription is heading your way for the summer at no extra cost. As Engadget reports, YouTube is rewarding subscribers who have been using the premium streaming service for a while with a free Showtime subscription. What we don't know yet is how long your YouTube TV subscription needs to have been active to qualify. YouTube simply describes the offer as open to "longtime friends." The Showtime offer will grant access to all content on the service, but without the usually $10.99 charge every month (or $109.90 a year). It's also nice to hear that the free subscription does not end with an auto-renewal with charges attached. You can keep watching until Sept. 5 and then decide if you want to continue or not. Obviously Showtime is hoping you will pay up and continue being a subscriber after that. Read more...More about Youtube Tv, Tech, and Streaming Services

Best 4K TV deals this weekend: Get a 75-inch LG TV for less than $2,000
Avengers, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Luigi's Mansion 3, the Breath of the Wild sequel AND Link's Awakening finally exist in the same universe as us.  But, as exciting as E3 is, waiting months — let alone a year — to play those games is painful. You'll need something to tide you over until then. If comfort food isn't working, we think a new 4K TV could do the job. No, it's not the same as playing in Hyrule (and seeing Zelda with a new haircut), but watching the final season of Jessica Jones in HDR with over eight million pixels sounds like a pretty damn good distraction.
