CNN:n saamien tietojen mukaan amerikkalaisäiti hävisi huoltajuustaistelun entistä miestään vastaan Saudi-Arabiassa. Oikeuden heinäkuisen päätöksen mukaan hänen kasvatustyylinsä oli liian länsimainen. Amerikkalainen Bethany Vierra muutti Saudi-Arabiaan vuonna 2011. Hän työskenteli muun muassa opettajana paikallisessa yliopistossa. Vierra meni aikanaan naimisiin paikallisen miehen kanssa ja he saivat yhdessä tyttären, Zainan.
