Stephen Colbert hangs out with PM Jacinda Ardern in New Zealand and it's super wholesome
If you're a regular person arriving in a new country for a visit, you'll normally have to get a cab or wait for a bus from the airport. Not Stephen Colbert, though. When he touches down in New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is waiting to meet him. "She has come on the show a couple of times already now, and she invited me to visit New Zealand both times — and the second time she said she'd pick me up at the airport," Colbert explains at the start of the clip above. "So recently, I got on a plane to see if she meant it." Well, she absolutely did. And the 12 minute segment above documents exactly what happens next. Swedish gold-for-cryptocurrency scammer finally extradited to US
A Swedish citizen has been extradited from Thailand to the US. The Swede is facing charges of securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering based on a heinous cryptocurrency investment con he’s run since 2006. According to a US Department of Justice release, Roger Nils-Jonas Karlsson was extradited yesterday after being arrested in Thailand in June this year. As Hard Fork has previously reported, Karlsson and his company, Eastern Metal Securities (EMS), were charged earlier this year following a complaint that claimed he had been running a gold-based investment scam. EU defies Boris Johnson and declares UK will only get a 'bare-bones' trade deal or a no-deal Brexit next year
The EU's trade chief says Boris Johnson will only get a "bare-bones" trade deal with the EU next year, or none at all. The prime minister has insisted that the UK will leave the EU in January and says there is "bags of time" to wrap up negotiations for a comprehensive new trade deal by December 2020. But Sabine Weyand, the EU's Director-General for Trade, said there wasn't enough time to strike a new deal by then, leaving either a "bare-bones" deal or a hard no-deal exit, according to a Sun report. Boris Johnson's government admits it has no plans to carry out an economic assessment of his Brexit deal

Facebook gets into the meme-making biz with experimental Whale app
Image: Facebook Last week, Facebook quietly released a new meme-making app called Whale, The Information reports. The app is currently only available on the Canadian App Store, where its listing says it can be used to edit your own photos or images from a library of stock photos. You can then share your creations on social media platforms such as Instagram and Messenger. The app’s listing confirms that it’s been developed by Facebook’s New Product Experimentation (NPE) team, which was set up earlier this year to develop new experimental apps for the social media giant. At the time, Facebook said it was using the separate brand name to set the expectation that its apps could change rapidly, or even shut down if the company finds that they’re not useful... For one beautiful night, #fartgate actually united all of Twitter
There is so much that divides us. Science has somehow become partisan; truth itself is up for debate; America is split down the middle when it comes to deciding whether or not literally asking a foreign leader to interfere in an election is an impeachable offense. But there is one thing we can all agree on: Farts are funny. And on Monday night, Twitter users from every point on the political spectrum were delighted to find themselves engrossed in #fartgate. During a live cross on MSNBC's Hardball, where host Chris Matthews was discussing the latest impeachment hearing developments with Rep. Orville Peck: I grew up feeling alienated - so I became a lone cowboy
The masked singer giving country a queer steer talks about staying anonymous and why he thought Dolly Parton was like ‘Pee-wee Herman’ Forget sexy cats, world leaders and the cast of Succession. Labour’s programme is reasonable, not radical – more Scandinavia than Venezuela | Tom Kibasi
Utilities and rail are public-owned across Europe. South Korea has full-fibre coverage. This is a plan to mend capitalism, not end itIn the turbulence of British politics of recent years, the old rules appear to have been shattered. They were, it turns out, mere articles of faith whose origins were mystic rather than objective, reflecting the biases of their proponents more than the reality of politics. From the Brexit referendum to the popularity of public ownership to the 2017 general election result, the public confounded the pundits.Under such circumstances, a degree of reflectiveness might have been called for. Yet humility remains in short supply. Many commentators continue to scoff at any signs of progressive ambition. Programmes of privatisation are common sense whereas any attempt to nationalise monopolies is dismissed as pie-in-the-sky utopianism. The economic and social lunacy of austerity was presented as a sober necessity, while increasing public investment has been framed as unaffordable. Continue reading...

Talking Horses: why Cyrname can give Altior his toughest test yet
He has yet to record a win on his seasonal debut, but for an 11-8 chance, Cyrname still seems to have an awful lot going for himAltior has set off as an odds-on shot for 13 of his 14 wins over fences and he is odds-on once again, at a top price of 8-11, for his much-anticipated seasonal debut in the Christy 1965 Chase at Ascot on Saturday. It is the biggest price Altior has been since he started at evens for the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2018 – if you don’t count the 15-2 in-running when he appeared to be struggling a circuit later – and many punters will need no further invitation to wade in head down. But he is, of course, those odds for a reason, and there are strong grounds for arguing that Saturday’s Grade Two contest will put Altior’s unbeaten record over jumps under greater strain than any of the nine Grade Ones he has added to his record so far. In fact, if you set out to design a race and an opponent to finally end Altior’s 19-race winning streak, the contest would probably involve a significant step up in trip at the start of the season, and the horse would be the absolute spit of Paul Nicholls’s Cyrname. We all say things we regret. Trawling young activists’ tweets denies them a chance | Ilyas Nagdee
Penalising young people entering politics for ill-thought-out social media posts is short-sighted and bad for democracyI remember growing up in Old Trafford, Manchester, seeing the poverty and the overpolicing in the community around me, and trying to make sense of the world. Without any meaningful political education at school, many – including myself – turned to the internet as a source of information during our formative years. Here many of us were confronted with seductively simplistic – yet in hindsight, deeply problematic – “explanations”, which at the time seemed coherent and appeared to knit together our experiences.Looking back, I can laugh at how stupid and misguided many of those opinions were, whether it was thinking that secret societies ran the world, or that perhaps communities like my own were predisposed to crime or tax-dodging. It was only later in life that I would become more politically aware and be provided with the tools to understand and articulate the issues of an unjust economic system, institutional racism and so on. My girlfriend is a virgin – can our sexless relationship survive?
She is not comfortable with physical contact, and I don’t want to lose what we haveI’m a 36-year-old man. I have been in a relationship for a year, and love my girlfriend. But she is a virgin, and says she is not sure she ever wants to have sex. She is not comfortable with physical contact. I don’t want to lose what we have. I don’t want to make her uncomfortable by asking her to do things that she isn’t happy with. Is there a way of being physically satisfied in a sexless relationship? It is not unusual for someone who has never made love with another person to feel unsure, anxious or even afraid of sex. Patience is vital. But if you feel sexual expression within a relationship is really important then you will have to explain that to her and address this together. An ideal starting point would be to help her to feel safe enough to try to explain exactly why she lacks sexual interest. Some reasons could be a fear of pregnancy, lack of education about sexual behaviour, previous relationship problems or lack of attraction. Continue reading...

This is good news, because it’s a great product, and I’d recommend picking one up when it’s out if you’re using the newer, smaller Switch.
