I thought I’d made it when I got to Cambridge University. How wrong I was | Daniella Adeluwoye
I was sold a dream of upward mobility. But from cash to culture, it’s clear my working-class background still counts against meI’ve always been a diligent worker. Having worked part-time throughout my A-levels in a fish and chip shop, I knew what hard work meant. When I received my offer to study at Cambridge University I was congratulated by my colleagues for finally “making it”. In the warm heat of June, a few days before my last exam, I thought this would be the last time I would smell the fish in batter mix as it hit the sizzling oil. I reflected on the idea that Cambridge meant I was finally competing on a level playing field with socially and economically privileged students. We need to stop talking about Antonio Brown as a football story
The conversations around the NFL star’s release have all centered on his future. It’s a problem that goes beyond sportsIn the hours following Friday’s announcement that wide receiver Antonio Brown was released by the New England Patriots amid mounting allegations of sexual misconduct only 11 days after signing with the team, the media served up a competitive play-by-play on his status. TMZ reported Brown “looking sad” as he touched down in Miami. CBS pondered “why the Patriots could be in trouble if things get any worse”. Iterations of “Brown out. What now?” sprouted up innumerably across the web. Brown, for his part, tweeted eight similar “thank you” messages to the Patriots for the opportunity and a “Just got fired on Friday” with a facepalm emoji. A sizable chunk of the thousands of comments in response to his posts invoked God and prayer for Brown’s resolve to stay strong and keep fighting. He capped off his thread with a photo sitting on the hood of a Rolls Royce in front of a private jet, with the caption: Beat the odds.Brown will not face criminal charges for the accusations leading to his dismissal, including most notably one of rape in a civil lawsuit by his former trainer, Britney Taylor (Brown has denied the allegations). He took again to Twitter on Sunday morning to answer the headlines’ musings himself. He said he was quitting the NFL and took shots at Patriots owner Robert Kraft and his former teammate Ben Roethlisberger. Earlier this week, Taylor spent 10 hours in discussion with the NFL investigation team going over her lawsuit. Her social media profiles have been wiped clean. Continue reading...

Today the world belongs to Fleabag! For once, the Emmys didn't mess up
In a rarity for these awards, all the winners actually deserved it – which made Game of Thrones’ final triumph after a night of sustained losses feel hollow• Emmys 2019: Fleabag and Game of Thrones win big at Brit-dominated awards• Emmys 2019: best of the ceremony, fashion and red carpet – in picturesGod, it’s weird to watch the Emmys not screw everything up, isn’t it? For decades now, we’ve been conditioned to expect the worst from the ceremony. The patter would be hacky and ill-advised (hello Sofia Vergara on a rotating plinth). The jury would giddily fling awards at movie stars, however mediocre, who deigned to dip their toes into the low-rent world of television. Modern Family would win things. It’s usually such a mess.So last night was strange. For the most part, the awards went to people who actually deserved them. Fleabag won. Barry won. Succession won. Killing Eve won. Ben Whishaw won. Chernobyl won. All the shows you wanted to win, but assumed wouldn’t because they were slightly more challenging than the usual Emmys fare, all won. Continue reading...

Alté, Nigeria's emancipated pop scene: 'People aren't used to being free'
They’ve faced accusations of privilege and pretension – but alté artists such as Odunsi, Santi and Lady Donli are walking their own path through an often conservative cultureJust after the release of his debut album, Mandy and the Jungle, 26-year old Santi is relieved. “I feel like I gave birth,” he says. “I don’t know how that feels, but if I could I’m sure it would kinda feel like that.”We’re in his flat in Victoria Island, an affluent area in Lagos. The near constant stream of visitors on a weekday afternoon reflects his position as one of the pioneers of alté: not a music genre, but a whole mindset in Nigerian music. Artists who align themselves with the scene are known for blending and fusing a variety of sounds, from R&B, soul and rap to Afrobeats and indie guitar music. Alté (which stands for alternative) draws heavily on western and Nigerian influences, and puts creativity, individuality and a sense of rebellion are at its core – qualities at odds with Nigeria’s conservative culture, where, in a country dominated by Christian and Muslim values, those who go against the grain are often treated with suspicion, derision or bewilderment. YouTube Music Gains New Personalized 'Discover Mix' Playlist Updated Weekly
YouTube Music has launched a new automated playlist called "Discover Mix" to help subscribers to the streaming service find new songs and artists that match their taste. Image via 9to5Google Similar to Spotify's popular "Discover Weekly," Google's new playlist features 49 songs consisting of music that's "picked for you," according to your listening history, and updated every Wednesday. The playlist can be found in the YouTube Music app, under a recently added "Mixed for you" shelf that also includes the "New Release Mix" and "Liked Songs" playlists. Like those lists, it can be saved to your library for quick access and supports offline playback. Initial comments on Reddit suggest the Discover Mix includes undiscovered tracks from artists that users are already familiar with, along with a few new artists, some from genres that haven't been explored before by the listener. The new playlist follows last month's launch of Google's "New Release Mix" to YouTube Music, which features the "hottest 50 songs" and looks designed to compete with Spotify's "New Music Friday," and Apple Music's "New Music Daily" playlist, which also launched in August. Discover Mix is currently rolling out, although like many of Google's new features, it may take some time to become widely available. Customers who subscribe to Google Play Music are also automatically signed up to YouTube Music, which is expected to replace the former service soon. N’Golo Kanté is Chelsea’s dynamic all-rounder in a team lacking structure | Jonathan Wilson
Jorginho’s arrival means the midfielder plays further upfield, displaying new tricks while still excelling in defenceHow much can be expected of a single player? That N’Golo Kanté is an exceptional footballer is no revelation but there is still something remarkable about the fact that the best holding midfielder in the world has become a totemic Roy of the Rovers figure at Chelsea. There he is darting across his own box to stifle a Liverpool attack. There he is slipping a pass in to the edge of the box and looking for a return. And there he is, drifting in from the right and finding the top corner with an ungainly but nonetheless precise finish. He is their alpha and their omega, their beginning and their end. He is all things to all men and by that means he might save some games – but not this one.Kanté was exceptional against Liverpool, in the second half a blur, the force driving Chelsea forward. Only one Chelsea player made more tackles than him, only one more interceptions than him, only one had more shots than him and nobody completed more dribbles than him. He has, against expectations, transformed himself into a complete midfielder. Continue reading...
