It's time to add internet slang 'ship' to the dictionary
I came of age online. LiveJournal and Tumblr were fixtures for me in the early 2010s, when Harry Potter fan-fiction was written at warp speed and Tumblr had not yet banned adult content. In those days, one could not go far without running into the internet slang term “ship.” Ship, a term so ubiquitous in fandom it has its own Wikipedia page, was immortalized on Urban Dictionary in 2003, in noun and verb form. Noun, short for relationship. Verb, to endorse a romantic relationship.  While the concept of wanting two fictional characters to have sex/fall in love predates “ship,” the term reportedly first entered the online forum sphere in the 1990s with The X-Files. Fans who wanted to see Mulder and Scully together were known as “relationshippers,” which was truncated to just “R’shippers,” and finally just “shippers.”  Read more...More about Dating, Ship, Oxford English Dictionary, Dictionaries, and Culture

Don’t dismiss the ‘other’ political parties: they might be the future | Alan Finlayson
Groups that existed on the fringe of British politics a generation ago have recently become key playersIn the 1970s, when I was still at primary school, I was convinced that Britain had four parties: Conservative, Labour, Liberal and Others. Those were the parties listed by the BBC when it showed the running totals of seats on election night. When I realised my mistake, the word “others” continued to intrigue me. And I’ve come to think that one way of understanding the last quarter-century of British politics is as the slow reveal of what lay behind that label. In our fragmented political culture, parties that once didn’t warrant a namecheck now help make the running. Continue reading...

5 great Apple Arcade games you may have missed
When Apple Arcade launched in September, the subscription service debuted with an incredible number of games — so many, in fact, that it could be hard to find the best things to play. In the ensuing weeks and months, a steady trickle of new games has hit the platform, making that search even harder. Apple Arcade is now home to more than 100 games, and while the top end is full of great titles, the quality varies quite a bit. And that’s become even more true as the service has become more crowded. The huge number of games, compared with the relatively quiet way Apple goes about releasing them, means there’s a good chance you missed some of the better titles to hit the service. (A holiday season filled with lengthy blockbusters like Death... Continue reading…

The AirPods Pro are the first noise-cancelling AirPods — here's how to control their noise-cancellation modes
Crystal Cox/Business Insider Not all AirPods are noise-cancelling. The first two AirPod versions, notably, don't include any noise cancellation features. The new AirPods Pro, however, have noise-cancellation features built in, including Active Noise Cancellation and a "Transparency" mode that mixes in ambient sound. You can control the noise cancellation using the AirPods Pro stems, from the iPhone, or using an Apple Watch.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. The AirPods Pro are Apple's first noise-cancelling wireless earbud. The AirPods (both the original version and the slightly updated version two that Apple released in Spring 2019) don't have noise-cancelling features.  But the AirPods Pro have three noise-cancelling modes: Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode (which mixes in some ambient sound, so you can still hear what's going on around you) and Off (which is equivalent to not using noise cancellation). See the rest of the story at Business InsiderNOW WATCH: Watch Elon Musk unveil his latest plan for conquering MarsSee Also:'Can you transfer money from Venmo to PayPal?': Not directly, but you can use your bank account — here's howHow to change your avatar on a PS4, to customize your profile and better represent yourself online'Why won't my flashlight work on my iPhone?': 4 ways to troubleshoot your iPhone flashlight if it isn't workingSEE ALSO: The best iPhone accessories from cases to lightning cables

How to block someone on eBay and prevent them from placing bids or making offers on your items
Natee Meepian/Shutterstock It's relatively easy to block someone on eBay so that they can't bid on your items, which is useful if you have had an issue with a buyer in the past. You can have up to 5,000 eBay usernames on your blocked list, although if you ever get to that number you may want to reevaluate some of your own life choices. Blocked buyers can still see your eBay listing, but they cannot place a bid, make an offer, or use the Buy It Now option. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Most eBay transactions are smooth and pleasant, with buyers promptly paying for auctions won and sellers swiftly shipping out products in just the condition they were described. That's why the platform has become such a prominent retailer, and it's what makes eBay a great resource both for generating revenue and for getting stuff to the folks who want it. Twitter censures UK Tory Party for changing its blue-check account name to "FactCheckUK" during the prime ministerial debates
The UK is having an election in less than a month, and last night, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn debated Tory archclown Boris Johnson for a televised debate in which Johnson had to defend his record as a lying, racist, philandering, cowardly failure of a human being, and of a leader to his party and the nation. During the debates, the @CCHQPress Twitter account -- which has a Twitter "blue check" indicating that its identity has been verified by the company -- changed its screen name to "FactCheckUK," a name very similar to the existing UK impartial fact-checking service "FactCheck." Having done so, the account emitted a stream of calumnies and falsehoods about the Labour Party, all appearing under the "verified" FactCheckUK by-line. Twitter has publicly characterised the move as "[an attempt] to mislead people by editing verified profile information" and has sworn that any repeat of this stunt or similar moves by the Tory party will lead to "decisive corrective action." Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly insists that there was nothing wrong with his party's actions. "It is inappropriate and misleading for the Conservative press office to rename their twitter account 'factcheckUK' during this debate," said Full Fact, an independent British fact-checking charity in a post. "Please do not mistake it for an independent fact checking service." Twitter has a policy against impersonation that states: "Twitter accounts that pose as another person, brand, or organization in a confusing or deceptive manner may be permanently suspended under Twitter's impersonation policy." Britain's Labour Party joined the wave of criticism saying, "Conservatives' laughable attempt to dupe those watching the #ITVDebate by renaming their twitter account shows you can't trust a word they say," the party tweeted from its official account. I compared kid's meals from major fast-food chains and found Chick-fil-A and Wendy's easily defeated McDonald's iconic Happy Meal
Erin McDowell/Business Insider When it comes to fast-food kid's meals, the McDonald's Happy Meal is undeniably iconic. However, is the smiley red box really the best kid's meal when it comes to taste, value, and overall joy factor? I tried kid's meals from McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, Burger King, and Wendy's to determine which one was best — to the point where even a fully-grown adult might want to order it. While McDonald's put up a valiant fight, Chick-fil-A won out with its large portions, fluffy yet crispy waffle fries, and signature nuggets. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. The last time I ordered a kid's meal was at least 14 years ago.  So, when I set out on a mission to order four kid's meals from major fast-food chains and determine which one was best, I didn't exactly know what to expect. What I found surprised me — and may have convinced me to keep ordering kid's meals as an adult. While no other chain made me happier upon my purchase than McDonald's did with its grinning red box, I had to admit that what was inside was far less enticing. Chick-fil-A came out on top with its fluffy fries and signature nuggets. The portion size was generous, and truly could be enough food for an adult. Chick-fil-A was also the only chain that offered mac and cheese as an upgraded side option. Burger King disappointed with a basic kid's menu and a lack of healthy side options included in my order. The chicken nuggets tasted like sawdust and the fries were practically flavorless.  As for the toys I received with each meal, McDonald's did have the upper hand with its "motorized" Frozen toy. I also enjoyed the Burger King Emoji stuffed animal.  Here's a breakdown of every fast-food kid's chicken nugget meal that I tried, and how they ranked from worst to best. I found that the value of the meal was a very important factor for me in my ranking, just as it is for fast-food eaters everywhere.4. BURGER KING: From first impressions alone, I was disappointed in the Burger King kid's meal. Known as the King Jr Meal, every meal comes with milk and applesauce. At the location I ordered from, my meal came to $6.19. Erin McDowell/Business Insider Right away, I realized I had not been given apple sauce. I don't necessarily like apple sauce in the first place, but had I been a small child, this definitely could have been a just cause for a temper tantrum. Erin McDowell/Business Insider The nuggets seemed alright at first glance. 'OK boomer!' The insult of the year is about to become a TV show
Fox TV is trying to trademark the ultimate putdown to use as the title of a new show. But what sort of programme could they possibly be making? If you were born before the mid-1960s, one phrase will strike fear into your heart like no other. That phrase is ‘OK boomer’. For the uninitiated, ‘OK boomer’ has quickly become the defining meme of 2019; an offhanded putdown directed towards any older person with the temerity to tell a younger person how the world works, even though their understanding of how the world works was permanently paused in the late 90s. “You should get on the property ladder in your 20s like I did”. OK boomer. “Why don’t you save your money instead of buying a Pret sandwich every day?” OK boomer. You get it. And while it’s a terrific meme, you have to hand it to the executives at Fox television for realising that it will be an even better TV show. For Fox, no word of a lie, is attempting to trademark the phrase ‘OK boomer’ for entertainment purposes. Attorney Josh Gerben this week revealed that the network has made a trademark application for the term, claiming it has a ‘bona fide intent’ to launch a TV show of that name, ‘featuring reality competitions, comedy and game shows’. Spark email app gets a fresh redesign and dark mode
Spark is one of the best email apps around on both Android and iOS, offering tons of customization options and plenty of high-level features, but it has tended to lag behind some of its competitors when it comes to design. That changes today with the launch of the latest version of the app, which brings a slick redesign that makes Spark far more enjoyable to look at, along with a new dark mode setting. The odd, windowed design of the old app has been replaced by a more uniform background (either white or black, depending on which mode you select). There are also some much-needed visual tweaks, including a new font and the long-absent option to view avatars for contacts next to their emails. The update isn’t just cosmetic, though....
