Only Simon Rex Could Play a Washed-Up Porn Star and Maybe Win an Oscar
A24Mikey is at a job interview at a greasy spoon in rural Texas City, Texas. It’s going well. His fast-talking charm, like a turbo jet fueled by a petrol cocktail of desperation and hubris, is working on the hiring manager, just as it works on just about everyone he meets. That is, until it doesn’t. There’s one hiccup to all this babbling, hustler-like magnetism: that 17-year gap in his résumé.Mikey doesn’t skip a beat, delivering his bombshell revelation like a wrecking ball, with no qualms or unease. “I’m going to be straight with you,” he says. “I’m an adult film star. Porn. I’m a porn star.” He goes by the name Mikey Saber, he continues. He then, proudly, has them Google his work.It takes the entirety of Sean Baker’s new film Red Rocket, released by A24 this Friday, to determine if Mikey’s on a charm offensive or obnoxious disaster course when he returns to Texas from Los Angeles, bruised after a fight and with only $22 and his gray tank top to his name. He had belly-flopped to rock bottom when his porn career fizzled—not that he would ever admit it.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Feds: Would-Be Terrorist Trained for Jihad at Texas Gun Range
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/Getty; ABC NewsWhen Navy sailors shot and killed a terrorist in the middle of an attack on a military base in Texas last year, the investigation seemed like it would be short-lived. The shooter, Adam Alsahli, was dead and there were no apparent accomplices in the attack. But text messages sent by Alsahli on the morning of the attack have led the FBI to another Texas student whom law enforcement accuses of harboring extremist views. Over the past few months, prosecutors in Texas have sketched out Alsahli’s links to a criminal case involving an FBI informant, firearms training, and an alleged plan to travel to Gaza to wage “jihad.”In July, federal prosecutors charged Moctar Gouroudja Ahmadou, a Nigerian immigrant who came to the U.S. on a student visa in 2016, with illegal possession of a firearm after an FBI surveillance team followed him to a Houston-area gun range and allegedly observed him firing handguns and an AR-15 assault rifle.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Bongino Rips Crenshaw Who Rips MTG Who Rips Nancy Mace in Trump’s Craziest ‘Apprentice’ Yet
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/GettyA new season of The Apprentice has launched, and the backbiting is fiercer than ever. Old alliances are being broken as the antics get ever more outlandish in the quest to rise to the top of the attention economy. In case you missed this week’s drama, here’s a quick recap: Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw called the Freedom Caucus (whose members include Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Paul Gosar, and Matt Gaetz) “grifters” and “performance artists.” Radio host Dan Bongino fired back, calling Crenshaw a “false prophet.” Arizona Rep. Wendy Rogers tweeted that Crenshaw “must GO along with [Nancy] Mace and Ronna Romney [McDaniel]!!! Bye!”This is the kind of stuff that would make Omarosa blush, but we’re just getting started. Fan favorite and QAnon-friendly lawyer Lin Wood also continued his attacks on Tucker Carlson and Dan Bongino, while taking additional shots at Sean Hannity, Charlie Kirk, and Seb Gorka. Wood also said he had “severed my relationship with General [Mike] Flynn,” calling most of what constitutes Conservative Inc. the “real Deep State media,” and saying “they’re all in it together.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

Jodie Turner-Smith on What Anne Boleyn, Meghan Markle, and Princess Diana All Have in Common
Parisa Taghizadeh/Fable/Sony/AMCDespite the smash success of Netflix’s Bridgerton and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical Hamilton, which both shattered tightly held ideas when it came to casting people of color in period projects, there was still some commotion when Jodie Turner-Smith was cast in a new miniseries as legendary Tudor queen Anne Boleyn. But for British-born Turner-Smith, who is Black, it was never about accepting the previously perceived off-limits role simply because she could, but rather because it offered a chance to reexamine the life of a famously maligned and misunderstood woman.“It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want to just play this historical figure who is white because I can,” Turner-Smith explains to The Daily Beast, ahead of the premiere of AMC+’s three-part miniseries Anne Boleyn on Dec. 9. “It’s really more so about what resonates with me is the story.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

U.S. and Chinese Astronomers Are Teaming Up to Hunt for Alien Lights
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/GettyScientists are widening their search for alien civilizations. They might not find actual extraterrestrial life, but that doesn’t mean they won’t find something profound. For 60 years, experts in the field of SETI—the search for extraterrestrial intelligence —have spent most of their time and energy fine-tuning giant radio receivers and listening for alien signals—basically, stray broadcasts from current or extinct societies on faraway planets. But there are other ways to search for E.T. besides the radio. Other beings might have learned to use lights to talk to each other—and, indirectly, to us. “It's hard to predict what another civilization might be doing,” Dan Werthimer, a Berkeley astronomer, told The Daily Beast. There’s a burgeoning movement in SETI to start looking for the telltale flashes you might expect from a high-tech society. Think lighthouses, but much, much bigger.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here

The First Rule of the Democracy Club? Be a Damn Democracy.
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyGroucho Marx famously said that he refused to join any club that would have him for a member. It would be good for the United States delegation to this week’s Democracy Summit to let the spirit of that remark guide it there. For the summit, which will virtually host 110 countries, to be of any real value, it needs to establish real benefits for being a democracy, penalties for not being one, incentives to promote democracy, and standards high enough to preclude faux democracies, non-democracies and fading democracies from participating. And that includes us.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Biden Bets Big on a Gas Pipeline to Prevent Putin’s War in Ukraine
Anna Moneymaker/GettyAs Russian President Vladimir Putin toys with another invasion of Ukraine, President Joe Biden and other world leaders are hoping one piece of leverage could dissuade Putin from a military advance: the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.Nord Stream 2 is a natural gas pipeline stretching from Russia to Germany that’s completed but not yet pumping gas. The pipeline could provide billions in revenue for Moscow and Putin allies, and shutting down the pipeline would only be part of the economic sanctions that Biden and others are preparing for Russia if the country once again invades Ukraine. And yet, many lawmakers on Capitol Hill think the United States should shut down the pipeline now regardless of what Putin does.Read more at The Daily Beast.

My Five Favorite Meals: Celebrity Chef Cat Cora
Eddy Chen/NBCU Photo Bank/GettyThe incredibly well-respected, very celebrity, and trailblazing chef Cat Cora comes from a proud Greek American family rooted in Jackson, Mississippi. She was the first female Iron Chef, which she calls “the tipping point of my career. I was immediately thrust into the spotlight.”Cora studied at the Culinary Institute of America, the Hogwarts School of cooking, and soon was in France working in a pair of 3-star Michelin restaurants. “It was as high pressure as it sounds. It was a challenge,” she remembers. “It built character for me, and my resilience and hard work paid off. I was one of the few female chefs that dared to work in 3-star Michelin restaurants in France at a time when women were not allowed or invited into French kitchens.”Iron Chef really did catapult her into that rarified stratosphere of chefs who seem to walk on water. She became a TV star and wrote cookbooks, in addition to growing what has become a global food empire. In her wide-ranging cooking and entrepreneurial career, she has opened 18 restaurants across the country and, through franchise partnerships with airports and the Aramark corporation, literally has her name on hundreds of eateries. In 2004, she also started Chefs for Humanity, a charitable organization that strives to tackle hunger and obesity.Read more at The Daily Beast.

The New Version of the Omicron Variant Is a Sneaky Little Bastard
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/ShutterstockThere’s a new form of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus—one that experts say is hard to distinguish from the Delta variant using standard polymerase chain reaction, or PCR tests. The appearance of this sneaky “BA.2” subvariant—“sublineage,” is the scientific term—is the latest development in the still-developing crisis that the baseline BA.1 Omicron sparked after health officials in South Africa confirmed the new lineage, with its dozens of key mutations, two weeks ago.The hard-to-distinguish BA.2 sublineage is also a forceful reminder to the unvaccinated to get vaccinated, and the unboosted to get boosted. There’s a lot we don’t know about Omicron and its sublineages, but early signs are that the leading vaccines still work just fine against them. And, of course, all the jabs work even better with a booster shot.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Don't Panic—These Supply Chain-Proof Gfts are Guarenteed to Arrive Before Christmas
Photo: Scouted/The Daily Beast/Retailers.To be honest, when it comes to holiday gift shopping, I don’t have the best track record. Frankly, every single year that I can remember I’ve done all of my holiday shopping literally on Christmas Eve—and no, I do not advise doing this. Naturally, given the last-minute nature of shopping habits, I’ve also been known to forget a person or two on my list thanks in large part to poor planning and, well, procrastination. As you can imagine, these bad habits make it hard to shop online for gifts that will arrive before Christmas. This year is particularly anxiety-inducing for us historically last-minute gift shoppers thanks to the ongoing supply chain issues we’re experiencing, which has led most e-commerce brands and retailers to cut off their holiday shipping deadline much earlier than years prior. For reference, this year the shipping deadline for items to arrive by Christmas eve is December 15, although there is a large laundry list of e-tailers with earlier cut-off dates. As a bona fide holiday-hater with a penchant for procrastination, I’ve become pretty well-versed in the art of finding last-minute gifts that’ll arrive before Christmas but don’t scream “I waited until the very last second to find your gift.” And thankfully, some big-box retailers like Nordstrom and Amazon have added labels to their product listings that let the shopper know whether or not the item will arrive before Christmas when purchased that day, so it’s easier than ever before to shop in a pinch.Read more at The Daily Beast.
Senators Brand Instagram as the ‘New Tobacco’ for Teens

Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), the ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, called Instagram’s efforts to address mental health issues on the app the “bare minimum,” after Instagram released new features in the wee hours of Wednesday morning meant to nudge teens to “take a break” or switch to new topics if they’ve been stuck on one for a while.Read more at The Daily Beast.
Scientist Slipped Hubby Cancer Vax Secrets for His Lab, Feds Allege
Patrick Hertzog/Getty A Chinese scientist living in San Diego and working to develop an mRNA cancer vaccine gave her scientist husband confidential data from her employer so he could “further” his own vaccine research at his lab in China, a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Southern California federal court alleges.Last May, Chenyan Wu arrived at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on a flight from Shanghai with as many as 1,000 undeclared, improperly packaged, and unlabeled centrifuge tubes containing research samples, the filing states. Wu’s luggage also held “multiple containers of lab chemicals,” which border officers believed were “potentially hazardous.”When the FBI interviewed Wu, he told agents he had been running a cancer research company in China for the past 10 years called TheraMab, according to the complaint. Wu and his wife, Lianchun Chen, had a home in San Diego, and Wu explained that he had shut down his Chinese operation to continue his cancer research at a new lab he planned to establish in California.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Mark Meadows Sues Nancy Pelosi, Capitol Riot Committee

The full complaint has not yet been made public. The move comes the same day the committee indicated it would move forward with contempt charges after Meadows didn’t show up for his scheduled deposition.Meadows agreed just last week to speak to the panel of lawmakers, but he reversed course Tuesday. He has already turned over thousands of pages of documents, including some unflattering text messages, but his lawyers say he pulled out because the panel wanted to probe privileged matters. The committee has interviewed nearly 300 witnesses in its investigation of the attempted insurrection.Read more at The Daily Beast.
Jussie Smollett’s Case Played Out Like a Damn Episode of Empire
Chuck Hodes/Fox/Courtesy Everett CollectionThe trial of Jussie Smollett, and the crime that led to it — whether that crime was an attack on him, as he says, or a hoax he ginned up for media attention, as prosecutors are saying – feels an awful lot like an episode of Empire, from what turned out to be his last season on the show.In that season, the character he played, Jamal Lyon, was being betrayed by a con artist who was supposed to be loving him but was betraying him behind closed doors. Lyon’s using lots of drugs while also going through rehab and feeling washed up and, overall, seems an awful lot like the actor who was playing him from what has come out at the trial and over the three years since Smollett first reported his attack. The defense wants the jurors to see Jussie Smolett — a successful actor from a wealthy family — was a dumb, naive and lovestruck kid (he was in his mid-30s) who fell into a bad trap set by wicked men set on evil. And the prosecution wants jurors to see Jussie Smollett as a mastermind who plotted his own hoax for celebrity and attention. Both seem absurd to me, but on some level the jurors will have to decide which picture seems closer to the truth.Read more at The Daily Beast.
Russian State TV Drops Deranged Love Letter to Its Darling ‘Trumpushka’
Guido Bergmann/Bundesregierung via Getty ImagesRussian state media is, at least on the surface, jubilant about the outcome of the video summit between U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was focused on addressing Russia’s potential further incursion into Ukraine. State media outlet Vesti described the talks as “historic negotiations.” State TV host Olga Skabeeva summed up the aftermath of the meeting during Wednesday’s broadcast of Russia’s 60 Minutes: “WWIII is cancelled—for now.”Suggesting that the delay afforded by the summit is merely temporary, Skabeeva quoted U.S. Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland, who said that Putin wants not only to create a Soviet Union 2.0, but to control Eastern Europe as a whole. “All I would like to say about that—the sooner, the better,” she said. “Russia won the first round,” Vladimir Shamanov, who heads Moscow’s parliamentary defense committee, added. The shadow of former President Donald J. Trump hovered over talks between the United States and Russia. On Tuesday, as the summit was about to begin, Skabeeva alleged that Trump’s approval ratings were much higher than Biden’s. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out that the special channel used for the video exchange between the presidents was created during Trump’s tenure: “This is a secure channel. It was created according to decisions that were made by previous administrations. It was inactive, but technologically maintained in a working state. Now we have decided to use it for the heads of state. It creates the effect of a rather personal communication and... makes it possible to discuss very, very secretive topics.”Read more at The Daily Beast.
‘Gross Disservice’: Oklahoma AG Slammed for Idiotic Vaccine Comments
via FacebookThe top law enforcement officer in Oklahoma is facing a wave of criticism after he suggested on Tuesday that science surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines—which have been researched by scientists around the world for almost two years and approved in the U.S. even for children as young as five—remains unclear.“I think the science isn’t really clear on this COVID vaccine,” Oklahoma Attorney General John O’Connor said during a press conference about the state’s legal battle over COVID vaccine mandates. He stood alongside Gov. Kevin Stitt, who defended the state’s role in five lawsuits aimed at blocking federal vaccine requirements.“I have been vaccinated, and my problem is not with the vaccine, my problem is with the notion of it being mandated,” he said, before he went on to accuse federal officials of making employers “do the dirty work of the Biden administration” by requiring employees get the jab.Read more at The Daily Beast.

This New Fake Meat Was 3D Printed With Cocoa Butter
Adapted from ACS Food Science & Technology 2021, DOI: 10.1021/acsfoodscitech.1c00311Just a decade ago, people were ripping into the idea of ever eating artificial meat. Nowadays, plant-based meats are mainstream, found in national fast-food chains as well as local supermarkets. But the problem with these meat alternatives is that they don’t precisely mimic the specific biochemical arrangement of fat, muscle, and blood vessels found in actual meat cuts. And that’s a bit of a barrier to meatless alternatives to high-quality cuts like steak.A 3D-printer could fix that by creating plant-based artificial meat that precisely resembles traditional cuts and gives the food a more authentic structure and texture. A pair of scientists from Zhejiang University in China have just come up with one recipe that requires a completely bizarre but critical ingredient: cocoa butter. You’ll have to take their word for it—as you can see from the images presented, this 3D printed meat definitely looks more like a gelatinous dough than typical meat. But in a new study published in ACS Food Science & Technology, the researchers say their formulation is edible and nutritious, and contains about the same amount of protein as chicken.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip?
