Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Go Off on Trump for Debating Biden With COVID
CBS/ABCAs Stephen Colbert has explained to his Late Show audience before, he has spent almost all of 2021 trying his best not to talk about former President Donald Trump. “But no matter how hard you try to avoid him,” he said on Wednesday night, “his name keeps coming up.”The latest story Colbert couldn’t ignore comes from The Chief’s Chief, the new book by former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who reveals that Trump actually tested positive for COVID-19 three days before his September 2020 debate with Joe Biden, and not after as he had previously claimed. “Who could have known that he might have been positive at the debate that Tuesday?” Colbert asked before cutting to a clip of him suggesting just that in a clip that aired on The Late Show after Trump was hospitalized a few days after the in-person event. “You can’t go wrong when you bet on the former president lying,” he added.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Tucker Gushes Over Conspiracist Alex Jones: ‘Better Journalist’ Than NBC and CBS Reporters
Fox NewsFox News host Tucker Carlson on Wednesday night heaped praise on far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, claiming the Sandy Hook hoaxer is a “better journalist” than reporters at NBC and CBS while defending Jones’ participation in the Jan. 6 riot.Carlson, as he has done countless times in recent months, railed against the Jan. 6 House select committee during his Wednesday primetime broadcast. Describing it as nothing more than “an attempt to punish critics of the Democratic Party,” the Fox News star took issue with the committee’s recent subpoenas of self-described “dirty trickster” Roger Stone and Jones, among others. After claiming Stone—a longtime friend of his—had “nothing to do” with the Capitol riot while bemoaning the former Trump adviser’s subpoena, Carlson turned his attention to Jones. And according to the Fox host, the man who once screamed the government is “putting chemicals in the water that turn the friggin’ frogs gay” is a talented and serious newsman.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Andrew Cuomo Ogled Hope Hicks at the White House, Mark Meadows Says
GettyIn a new account of his time as Donald Trump’s fourth and final chief of staff, former Freedom Caucus Rep. Mark Meadows writes that the 74-year-old commander in chief would have beaten up protesters himself if Secret Service agents hadn’t made him hide in a bunker beneath the White House that the then-president later insisted he’d only been “inspecting.”“A few hours later, the White House entered Code Red. Protestors had jumped the fence on the Treasury side of the compound, and they were running toward the Oval Office. I’m sure that if President Trump had the choice, he would have headed out to the lawns and knocked their heads in one by one,” Meadows writes of the May 29, 2020, incident in his memoir, The Chief’s Chief, a copy of which was obtained by The Daily Beast ahead of its release next week.“But he didn’t have a choice. When it comes to the United States Secret Service, no one does. Either you do what they say, or they pick you up and make you do it. So when the Secret Service asked President Trump to head downstairs to the White House bunker, he complied. He knew that he could go to the bunker with a few agents by his side, or he could go on their shoulders kicking and screaming. For everyone’s sake the first option was better.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Outrage Grows in Virginia Beach After Decision Not to Charge Cop Who Shot and Killed Donovan Lynch
Justice For Donovon LynchFollowing the decision on Tuesday to not charge a Virginia Beach police officer for the shooting death of 25-year-old Donovan Lynch in March, Lynch’s family and supporters expressed dismay at the merits of the investigation and made fresh calls for the feds to handle the matter.“We’re disappointed, but not surprised,” said Wayne Lynch, Donovan’s father, in a press conference among supporters on Wednesday. “This is not over, it’s just begun,” he added, appealing to the Department of Justice. “I need justice for my son.”Immediately following the shooting of Lynch, which gained nationwide attention, in part, because Lynch was a cousin of musician and Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams, the Virginia Beach Police Department turned the investigation over to the Virginia State Police.Read more at The Daily Beast.

This Nest Candle is Christmas Melted Down Into Wax
Photo: Scouted/The Daily Beast/Nest.The candle aisle in a department store is my least favorite to peruse. Overstocked and packed together with numerous conflicting, overpowering, and headache-inducing scents like pumpkin pie, sugar cookie, Christmas tree, and leather, bad candles are lurking everywhere. And shopping for them online is simply out of the question because I never know what I’m getting into until I open a package to discover I’ve only invested in a future migraine. That said, there is one brand whose candles I trust to purchase sight-unseen without needing to run a scent test first. A few years ago, I was gifted a Nest candle for Christmas and was taken aback by how clean, subtle, pleasant, long-lasting, and addictive these candles are. Once you’ve lit a Nest candle, it’s unlikely you’ll settle for going on a fruitless quest down the candle aisle ever again.I was first introduced to Nest through their Hearth candle, which immediately became my initial favorite, especially during the fall season. Woodsy—smelling almost like a newly lit fire—this fragrant candle is a mainstay in my home during the holidays. Not long after discovering Hearth, I also started burning the Cedar Leaf & Lavender scent. I actually stocked nearly every room in my home with this clean fragrance, which I can only describe as smelling like an expensive wellness spa.Read more at The Daily Beast.

American Couple’s Trip to Cancun Ends in a Horrific Hotel Room Death
Courtesy Mykayla BolieuThe family of Sativa Transue, a 26-year-old American woman from Spokane, Washington who was found dead in her Cancun hotel room while on vacation with her boyfriend, said she looked like she had been “beaten to a bloody pulp” when Mexican authorities discovered her body on Saturday.“I received a call from the Mexican consulate letting me know my daughter has passed away and that she’s been found dead,” Jayme Bolieu, Sativa’s mother, told The Daily Beast in an interview. “How could my beautiful healthy daughter be gone? In another country? It took my breath away. A part of me died. She was my baby. I had her at 16. We grew up together. She was my life, my reason for living, my best friend.”Sativa’s mother and sister are still trying to make sense of what happened that Friday night and Saturday morning. They told The Daily Beast that Sativa had been texting them throughout the trip: “She was enjoying the sunshine and her trip was going okay, but not the best, because they [Sativa and her boyfriend] were fighting,” Mykayla, her 21-year-old sister, told The Daily Beast. On Saturday morning, Jayme had woken up to frantic texts from her daughter’s friends saying they were worried about Sativa after exchanging messages with her the night before.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Supreme Court Makes Clear the Unthinkable Is Here on Abortion
Leigh VogelAfter a half century of abortion rights protected by the landmark 1973 case Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court on Wednesday offered the clearest signs yet that the era of reproductive freedom is drawing to a grim close. The Court spent the morning hearing oral arguments involving a Mississippi law that makes it effectively impossible to obtain an abortion past 15 weeks of pregnancy. The state law clearly runs afoul of Roe and decades of settled legal precedent—and that’s exactly why Republicans wrote it. Mississippi’s cynical legal effort is the latest salvo in a decades-long Republican effort to build a test case capable of overturning abortion rights. The Supreme Court’s new conservative majority is close to handing Republicans one of their most consequential victories in a generation, but you wouldn’t know that from listening to lawmakers. For a party constantly making noise on every possible media platform, GOP elected officials are strangely unwilling to take credit for their war on women. They have good reason to clam up: 80% of Americans across the political spectrum support abortion rights. By gutting Roe, the GOP is declaring war on a staggeringly broad and deep coalition.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Conservatives Eye Kooky Gov’t Shutdown Gambit to Undo Vax Mandates
Alex WongWith government funding set to run out in a matter of days, a group of hardline Republicans are once again ready to shut it all down—this time, in the name of blocking President Joe Biden’s efforts to mandate the COVID vaccine for federal workers. But even if they manage to force a shutdown over the weekend, this maneuver won’t actually result in the change these conservatives want. And yet, that’s not really the point.Conservatives are only able to shut down the government because Democratic leaders didn’t leave themselves enough time to pass a funding bill through the normal process, which takes at least a few days if senators insist on running out the clock on all debate time. That means the Senate is relying on “unanimous consent” to fast-track the stopgap spending bill. But a few conservative senators don’t look apt to go along with those agreements.Read more at The Daily Beast.

QAnoner Ron Watkins Begs For Bitcoin to Finance Flailing Congressional Run
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Photos by Getty/Wikimedia CommonsA month into a lackluster congressional campaign, former 8kun administrator Ron Watkins sent a warning to his followers on the messaging platform Telegram.“I do NOT send direct messages to anybody asking people to buy crypto coins or gift cards,” Watkins wrote last week. “Please do not engage with accounts who claim to be me and ask you to buy gift cards or crypto on their behalf. It is not me.”At least someone was making money off Watkins’s campaign. Although Watkins, a QAnon-linked figure, does not have to file campaign finance reports until January, early indicators suggest that his bid for Congress has received underwhelming support. Previously, Watkins pledged to raise $1 million and unseat incumbent Rep. Tom O’Halleran in Arizona’s Democratic-leaning 1st congressional district. Instead, more than a month after launching his campaign, Watkins is making Telegram videos acknowledging “funding challenges” and attempting a pivot to Bitcoin fundraising.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? ABC NewsThe hosts of ABC talk show The View expressed unanimous disappointment in Dr. Mehmet Oz over his GOP Senate campaign announcement, declaring on Wednesday that the TV doctor had “gone over to the dark side” by pandering to Fox News viewers.Dr. Oz, who spent the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic peddling unproven cures and downplaying the severity of the virus, made a splashy entrance into the political ring this week. After former President Donald Trump’s hand-picked candidate dropped out over domestic abuse allegations, the New Jersey resident declared his candidacy for the open Pennsylvania Senate seat with an op-ed in the right-wing Washington Examiner and a friendly interview on Sean Hannity’s show.During Wednesday’s broadcast of The View, all four hosts acknowledged that they had “socialized” with the made-for-TV doc in the past but felt that he “took a turn” over the past couple of years.Read more at The Daily Beast.

This New Formula Can Help Us Vaccinate Poorer Countries
Douglas Levere / University at BuffaloVariants like Omicron are bound to arise when not enough people are vaccinated against deadly diseases like COVID-19. The more healthy bodies the novel coronavirus can infect, the more opportunities the virus has to mutate into something that can bypass our best efforts to finally overcome the pandemic. This is especially a concern in places like Africa, where Omicron was first detected, and where vaccination coverage in many countries is just 10 percent or less.“Failure to reach even a 10 percent vaccination rate in many countries creates ideal conditions for the virus to mutate and evolve, potentially into more lethal, transmissible variants,” Marcus Schabacker, the president and CEO of healthcare nonprofit ECRI, told The Daily Beast. Part of the problem is logistical—the vaccine needs to be kept very cold until it’s finally given to a patient. This is a nightmare in poorer communities worldwide that lack refrigeration infrastructure. But one way around this could be to freeze-dry vaccines so they can be shipped and stored at room temperature, making it way easier to get vaccines into arms across the planet. That was one big reason vaccination led to the eradication of smallpox.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here

Omicron’s Next Mystery: There Were Cases Two Months Ago? Travel Strategies Shift as Scientists Learn More
ReutersAs the scientific community works to parse just how bad the super-mutated Omicron variant of the coronavirus might be, individual countries are reacting in increasing erratic ways. More than 70 countries now have travel restrictions that primarily target southern African nations, even though new evidence suggests that the variant was found elsewhere long before South Africa’s scientists spotted it in a lab. Nigeria announced Wednesday that a look back through samples taken in October show Omicron was already present then. The Netherlands also found the variant in samples days before it was discovered in South Africa. In both countries, those who had the disease were either asymptomatic or had mild cases. Neither the Netherlands or Nigeria are included in most travel bans, including into the United States. France, which was quick to ban travel from southern Africa, said Wednesday it would reopen flights to the banned nations on Dec. 4 under “extremely strict” supervision. Other European nations are mulling similar changes on the back of news the the virus may not have originated there at all. There has not yet been a death attributed to the Omicron strain reported. Trump Tested Positive for COVID Before Biden Debate, Not After, Says His Ex-Chief of Staff
Reuters/Brian SnyderDid Donald Trump risk endangering countless numbers of people by showing up for an in-person presidential debate with Joe Biden days after testing positive for COVID-19 last September? That’s the extraordinary new claim from Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff. The Guardian obtained a copy of Meadows’ upcoming book, The Chief’s Chief, which claims Trump tested positive three days before his first debate against Biden on Sept. 29 last year. Meadows recounts Trump taking off on a helicopter from the White House lawn on Sept. 26 to get to a Pennsylvania rally right after attending the Supreme Court confirmation event for Amy Coney Barrett—now known to have been a super-spreader event.Meadows recounts the White House doctor calling him as Marine One lifted off with Trump on board. “Stop the president from leaving,” Sean Conley purportedly told Meadows. “He just tested positive for COVID.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

2022’s Most Hotly Anticipated Movies and TV Shows, From ‘The Batman’ to a ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily BeastIn some ways, 2021 proved more trying than 2020, as the promise of a new, less deranged president and coronavirus vaccines were cruelly drowned out by an assault on the U.S. Capitol, the right-wing/libertarian COVID disinfo machine (amplified by schismatic platforms like Facebook), dangerous variants, and extreme weather.Films and television shows provided a brief respite from the unrelenting noise. We got lost in tales of headless knights and callow space princes; remige-less birds in gilded cages and voices that soar to the heavens; childhoods shattered to pieces and the first pangs of love. Comedians like Bo Burnham made us feel a little less alone, as did the dirty deeds of the Roy family and everyone’s favorite curmudgeon, Larry David—not to mention Joe and Love. Dark Money Group Paid Former Trump AG to Ask for Pardons—and He Never Registered as a Lobbyist
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyIn Donald Trump’s final months in office, lobbyists swarmed the White House in hopes of securing pardons for their clients. It was a cash bonanza for Beltway insiders aspiring to bend the aggrieved president’s ear, as disclosures required by federal law later revealed. But one person stands out among that crowd, both for his former role in the Trump administration and for the fact that he never registered as a lobbyist—even though he was being paid $400,000 by a conservative dark money group that had tapped him to lead its efforts to secure pardons and commutations.Matthew Whitaker held senior roles in Trump’s Justice Department from Sept. 2017 to Feb. 2019, finishing off his DOJ tenure with a three-month stint as the acting attorney general. HIV/AIDS Orgs: DaBaby Ghosted Us and Didn’t Donate a Dime
Rich Fury/GettyDaBaby is flying high. The Charlotte-based rapper is in the midst of a multi-city concert tour and was recently defended by Dave Chappelle in his controversial Netflix special The Closer. Back on July 25, however, the hip-hop artist received heavy criticism following an unprompted homophobic rant at Miami’s Rolling Loud Festival.“If you didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS, or any of them deadly STDs that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up,” the 29-year-old instructed the crowd. “Ladies, if your pussy smell like water, put your cellphone lighter up. Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up.” (To make matters worse, DaBaby was flanked by Tory Lanez, a blatant middle finger to Megan Thee Stallion, who’d just performed on the same stage and had a restraining order against Lanez over the time he allegedly shot her in the foot.)Following a wave of backlash, DaBaby embarked on a halfhearted apology tour (his social media mea culpas have since been deleted) and met with a handful of HIV/AIDS awareness organizations back in August in the name of educating himself and repairing his image. But several of those organizations told The Daily Beast that DaBaby never made a financial contribution to them. Additionally, DaBaby failed to partner with any of the groups that he’d met with for World AIDS Day (Wednesday, Dec. 1), and many of the organizations say they never heard from DaBaby again.Read more at The Daily Beast.
